    Combining 21st-century rocket science and 1950s B-movie technology, NASA on Monday released a 3-D, black-and-white picture of the bleak surface of Mars snapped by the newly landed rover Spirit.

    NASA scientists used the high-resolution image to pick the first target on Mars they want Spirit to visit: a dusty depression that could yield clues to whether the Red Planet was once suitable for life.

    "It's a window" onto Mars' ancient past, said Steve Squyres, the mission's main scientist.

    Scientists in Virginia are analyzing data sent back from Spirit to help prepare for the landing of Opportunity, a twin rover of Spirit.

    The data will be used to create a computer animation of the descent to help researchers better understand the dynamics, said Prasun Desai, leader of the Mars Exploration Rover at NASA's Langley Research Center.

    "You know a picture is worth a thousand words," Desai said. "Well, an animation is worth a thousand pictures."

    Over the next three months, Spirit will look for geologic evidence that Mars was once warmer, wetter and perhaps more conducive to life.
